(Almost) Green Menu for Super Bowl XLIV

By Michael Hughes  February 3, 2010

Super Bowl is not exactly known for its healthy treats but theres no use destroying your body and the planet.

This Sunday marks the most watched television event of the year: Superbowl Sunday (or is it the ads)! So as the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts face off, most Americans will gather around their mega screens and indulge in snacks and beer. Is there a way to eat well, drink in moderation and not totally trash your body? Of course there is! I have put together a quick list of how to give your Superbowl Party a little more green this year! Okay not totally.

Chile con Queso

Some things that are not great for you, just taste, well, great!  Like Chile con Queso; (Velveeta in a double boiler with a container of “hot” frozen chopped green chile stirred in).  Not the green you were looking for?  It tastes great heated and served with “organic” tortilla chips.  That and beer OMG heaven! Not for the lactose intolerant Uncle Bob!

Pico de Gallo and Grilled Pizza

Here you go vegans. Great healthy snacks to serve are organic salsa or pico de gallo and chips, organic hummus and carrots, and organic crudité and a little balsamic and olive oil. Grilled Smoky Corn & Black Bean Pizza (Vegans can replace the cheese with a soy look alike). The secret to a grilled pizza is having all your ingredients ready to go before you head out to the grill.

Pulled Pork

Great meaty stuff (not for vegans) Pulled Pork. The trick to making pulled pork healthy is to trim the meat well and then skim any extra fat off the sauce after cooking. Serve on a soft whole-grain bun with crisp, cool coleslaw.

Mmmm Beer

When it comes to beer there are none greener than our own Colorado New Belgium Brewery not only is their brewing company wind powered, they recycle methane to power their own systems, have in house eco-wastewater treatment systems, and recycle building materials.  I love the Fat Tire (amber ale), Sunshine Wheat (lighter fare), 2 Below (winter ale) all great choices. Drink responsibly and get home safely.  Have a designated driver if needed.

Cleanup and Recycling

After the game has been won and all the party goers have gone, the worst part is the cleanup. A quick reminder; compost all leftover food products and use the metal flatware if you can. If you used disposable use biodegradable dishes and flatware. Also, be sure to recycle all beer bottles, soda cans, and wine bottles. Give ‘em a quick rinse before tossing in to the recycle. You can use recycled trash bags and cleaning products. Check out Seventh Generation for these products.  Drive Safe!
